The unsearchable greatness of God is worthy of our praises.

Psalm 145:1-3 I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. 2  Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever. 3  Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

Psalm 145 is another Psalm of unfettered praise to Jehovah. I would like to look into this psalm which was written by King David. The Divine Name Jehovah is used 9 times in this psalm and the name Elohim is found once. It is a God centered psalm of praise.

The object of all this praise is Jehovah, the covenant keeping, promise keeping God who inhabits eternity yet dwells with those who have humble hearts and contrite spirits. He is the unchanging God who will always do what He says He will do. He is the God of unlimited lovingkindness.

Elohim is plural in form and it reminds us that the Godhead of Father, Son and Spirit created the heavens and the earth in unity. God commanded everything to work according to the function of His design and He spoke it all into existence. He governs the material universe by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:1-3) and He has all authority to govern mankind.

King David is also called a man after God's own heart in the sense that he loved the LORD with all his heart (Acts 13:22). Yes, David did commit some terrible sins that brought shame and reproach upon his God, but he also sought forgiveness and mercy and he received it from Jehovah.

David wrote many of the psalms and his tender heart toward God is on full display for our encouragement.

King David begins this psalm by expressing a commitment to extol Jehovah. He wants to set the LORD up high for all others to see His glory. David follows this by saying that as long as he has breath he will bless the name of his God.

The king of Israel says it again in verse 2. Every day he is going to bless God and praise his name forever.

Why is David moved to praise Jehovah so abundantly? Verse 3 tells us why. It is all about the greatness of Jehovah.

Jehovah is great which means great in magnitude and in all important things. Jehovah is greatly to be praised and a different word is used that means with much power and vigor. We are to have real energy expended when we gather with our church family to worship.

King David then tells us that the greatness of Jehovah is unsearchable. A different word is translated "greatness" and this one refers to the nature or character of God as being great in His divine essence.

All men everywhere will testify that Jehovah alone is God by witnessing His works.

Psalm 145:4-7  One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. 5  I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works. 6  And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness. 7  They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.

These 4 verses are full of testimony of Jehovah's great works, His acts and majesty. Each generation is going to tell the next generation about the wonderful works of the LORD. King David then says that he will speak of the glory filled honor that belongs only to Jehovah.

David declared that all men shall speak of the power of Jehovah's terrible acts. The word terrible means men will be filled with fear and dread. They are overwhelmed by the awesome display of Jehovah's works.

Redeemed men, women and children are going to speak of the past works of God as a permanent memorial to His glory. They are even going to sing of His righteousness. What a wonderful and blessed time that will be when praises for Jehovah are passionately sung in all the world.

The very nature of Jehovah should cause us to respond in praise.

Psalm 145:8-10  The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. 9  The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. 10  All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.

In the text above David is providing more reasons for us to have our hearts filled with praises for Jehovah. Our God extends His grace in His dealings with us. His lovingkindness is on display as Jehovah is full of compassion.

God made us and knows that His redeemed children are still burdened by the flesh, the old sin nature. He knows that we are but dust and that we are prone to failure and straying from His benevolent hand. Jehovah is always faithful and He is slow to become angry with our failures and His mercy is great.

David tells us that Jehovah is good to all. We know that He sends sunshine and rain upon all people good or evil. He always does good even when mankind does not recognize it. His tender mercies are over all His works.

If the earth were 2% closer to the sun it would be too hot for life. If the earth were 2% farther away from the sun it would be too cold to support life. If the moon were closer to the earth its gravitational pull would cause major flooding twice each day as the tides swept in and out. These are just a few of the tender mercies that are over all His works.

Acts 14:17  Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

David stops at this point to remind us that all the born again, regenerated children of God should bless our great God for all that He does for us.

Points to Ponder....

  • Do we get up every day like David did with hearts set on praising Jehovah?
  • Do we share the praise worthiness of Jehovah with others so that non- worshipers might become worshipers?
  • Do we reflect on the very nature of Jehovah and His tender mercies?
I pray that the Lord will speak to our hearts in this Psalm of praise. I pray that He will help us wake up ready to praise Him not matter how challenging our circumstances are. I pray that He will transform our hearts with praise so we become willing witnesses telling others about the only hope of salvation. I pray that we think about His tender mercies so that we are filled with humility.
