Psalm 119: Focus On God's Word Pt. 136 Trusting God's Word As Settled, Joyful Worshippers.
Psalm 119:41,42 VAU. Let thy mercies come also unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word. 42) So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.
We are seeking to understand why we are instructed to pray for the mercies of Jehovah to flow to us, and we are reminded that we must trust what God promises to us in His Word.
When Jonah fled from the LORD and was caught in a terrible storm, all the sailors manning the ship "Cried, every man to his god." Natural events teach us to cry out for help and the Bible tells us who the One, True God is, that we must cry out to.
There are many benefits for believers when we pray for the mercies of God according to His Word.
Those who trust God's Word are settled when others are afraid.
Psalm 112:7,8 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. 8) His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
Our world is filled with unrest, chaos, disunity, and hate. Evil actions and depravity seem like they have spread everywhere.
Yet, the born again child of God who is trusting in the Word of God, is not shaken by bad news. Trusting Jehovah fixes our hearts upon the things of God rather than the things of this present evil world.
Trusting in God's Word removes our fears and increases our confidence that God will do what He said He will do.
Those who trust God's Word are joyful worshippers.
Psalm 13:5,6 But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. 6) I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.
When we trust God's Word, our hearts will be filled with joy. We will rejoice and sing praises to the God of our salvation. We will sing praises to him for His bountiful provision for this life and for eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
Those who trust God's Word are not cast down.
Psalm 42:4,5 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. 5) Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
Those who trust the scriptures, pour out our burdens and cares to our All Gracious LORD. We are to come into the house of God with joyful voices singing His praises.
Our soul is not cast down, nor are we discouraged or disquieted by the circumstances of life. Our hope is in Jehovah and what He has promised to us.
Trusting God's Word comes from knowing Him.
Psalm 9:9,10 The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. 10) And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
Jehovah is our refuge, that safe place where we can flee when trials, troubles and sorrows threaten to sweep us away. He will shelter us in times of trouble.
As we know His names, for each of His names teach us about Him, we build greater trust in Him. We learn by experience that He never abandons His children, but rather, protects us as our Father in heaven.
May we all be able to say with Paul that "I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able" to do all that He promises to do.
Trusting in God's Word strengthens our faith and communion with Him.
Psalm 56:9-11 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. 10) In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. 11) In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
We gain experiences that draw us closer to God as we learn to trust His Word, and as we see Him prove to be faithful time after time.
We are confident that Jehovah will protect us from our enemies, and in particular, the Devil. We learn by going through various situations, that God is for us.
We are "in God" and "in Jehovah" just as the New Testament tells us that all believers are "in Christ."
When we are regenerated by the Holy Spirit, we are put in Christ. Thus, with the Psalmist, we can praise His Word because we are in Him.
We trust Him because we have learned over many life experiences that what God says is true and what He says He will do, is what He does. God is for us. Why would we fear what man can do to us?
Thoughts to Ponder...
Psalm 107:41-43 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock. 42) The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. 43) Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.
We trust Jehovah because He will lift up the poor in spirit who suffer many afflictions in this life. He will make families of believers like large flocks.
Those who are righteous through faith in Christ, will see these things come to pass and rejoice.
However all wicked ones will stop their own mouths. They will not be able to speak a word against what God does for us when we trust Him.
May the LORD help us understand His lovingkindness, and may we pray for Him to pour that love of God into our hearts to such a degree, that we are greatly changed into the image of Christ, and live for His glory.
