Below you will find links to the YouTube channel of the church we attend, Heritage Baptist Church, in Smithville Ohio.

Pastor recently had surgery and asked me to fill the pulpit for last Wednesday evening service at our church.

Below is a link to the audio of my message. In addition, I am posting my notes so that you can read the lesson if you are unable to listen to it.

The glorious truth that God gave us His Word.

Exodus 31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Exodus 32:15-16 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. 16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

Exodus 34:29-32 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. 30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him. 31 And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them. 32 And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai.

Psalm 119:89 LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

Psalm 119:111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. Psalm 119:151-152

We see the glory that Scripture came from the All Wise God.

God gave us His Word and He reveals Himself to us in the scriptures.

We have the Word of God, not words of philosophers or men's misguided musings, in our hand when we open up our Bible.

Notice the language in the texts above.

Moses spent forty days and nights communing with God when he was given the Ten Commandments.

When we read our Bible, we are communing with God and can be greatly blessed by doing so.

A very corrupt culture presses in on our minds all day long and we must fill our heart with God's truth.

Moses brought down two stone tablets "Written with the finger of God!"

The next text tells us the tablets with engraving were the work of God and the writing of God!

We see the glory that the Spirit of Christ verbally inspired all of it.

Not part of it but all the scripture is inspired, every word and syllable, such that we have confidence that God gave His Word to us.

He gave us His word so that we might know Him, and learn how to live in accord with His will.

We see the glory that power of God preserves it.

The scriptures are "forever settled", meaning they are firmly fixed, immutable, unchangeable and eternally preserved by God.

This is why we have confidence that God speaks to us through His Word and the ministry of His Spirit.

The Devil tried turning the truth of God into a lie from teh beginning and he has been behind countless attacks upon the scriptures.

Innumerable copies of the Bible throughout the ages have been seized and burned by haters of God, and yet, we still have abundant copies of His Word today.

We see the  glory for those to whom God sent His Word.

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Notice Jesus' words in the Great Commission. We are to out and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

We are to teach all nations to obey Christ's commands.

Romans 10:8-13 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Jesus spoke to us through His apostles, and Paul tells us that the Word of God is very near to us, in our heart and mind and soul.

We have abundant access to the scriptures, both hard copies and digital copies.

Those who hear the gospel of Christ, repent of their sins and trust Jesus to save them, shall be saved.

Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Isaiah describes the glory of God who inhabits eternity. God is not restrained by space, matter or time like you and I are.

He created space, matter and time to be the structure of His creation but He governs it.

We see the glory that God sent His Word to all humanity throughout all history.

We see the glory that all nations can learn to obey Christ’s commands.

We see the glory that all sinners who repent and call upon Jesus can be saved.

The glorious design of the All Wise God for His Word.

Psalm 119:129-130 PE. Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them. 130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

When a sinner is converted to Christ, it is because of the power of the gospel of Christ.

The gospel breaks through the hard hearts, and vain imaginations that we are born with.

The light of His truth shines into the deep recesses of our heart, to lead us to repentant faith in Christ.

The Word shines the light of eternal truth such that an ignorant sinner can understand and call upon Christ for salvation.

1 Peter 2:9-10 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

This same glorious gospel calls sinners out of Satan's darkness and the depravity of this present evil world, into the marvelous glory, majesty and beauty of His Word.

1 John 1:5-7 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

The apostle John lived the longest of all Christ's apostles.

He walked and ministered with Jesus for 3 1/2 years.

He witnessed the suffering, death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Christ.

He was present for the birth of the Church in Acts 2.

He ministered in several churches until the Romans sent him to a penal colony on the Isle of Patmos.

Writing toward the end of the first century AD, John saw the church get off track and saw deviation from apostolic truth.

Therefore, His gospel and epistles were written to emphasize the essential truths of Christ and His gospel and as a corrective to get Christians back on track.

John tells us that a central message of the gospel is that God is Light, and in Him is no darkness at all (See James 1:16-17).

Those who profess faith in Christ but still walk in the sin darkened ways of the world, are liars and their profession is false.

Those who know and love God walk in the light with Him, and when the sin they confess it, forsake it and receive fresh cleansing that God promises to give.

We see the glory of God calling sinners out of darkness into the marvelous light of God.

Psalm 119:9-12 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. 10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. 11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. 12 Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.

How can a believer in Christ cleanse his way? How can a Christian whether young or old, be clean before God?

The answer is by taking heed to what God says in His Word. We must seek God with our whole heart when we read our Bible and when we hear someone preaching the Word.

We must hide His Word in our heart, be reading it, reading it again, and by thinking about it often, even memorizing scripture to the best of our ability.

Psalm 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

The light of God's Word illuminates spiritual perils that are around us so that we do not fall into sin.

Scripture shines like a bright beacon to show us the holy path God wants each of His children to walk on.

Ephesians 5:8-10 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

Thus, we are commanded to walk as children of light and to walk in the light of the Lord.

We see the glory of showing believers in Christ how to live holy lives in a sinful culture.

Psalm 95:1-3 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. 3 For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

Here is an invitation from God to come and worship Him. We are commanded to sing with all our heart, making a joyful sound.

We are to come with hearts full of thanksgiving for the benefits of His salvation and for His grace and mercy toward us.

We must sing and praise God in Psalms, which shows us that worshiping in spirit and in truth means our hymns and songs must have words that are traceable to the scriptures.

Psalm 119:7 I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.

Psalm 119:62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.

Psalm 119:161-168 SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word. 162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. 163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love. 164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments. 165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. 166 LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments. 167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly. 168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.

In this Psalm, we see the phrase “Thy Word” used 9 times in 8 verses. The Psalmist communicates the awe He has for the Word of God. This fills his heart with praise, rejoicing, love of God and hope from God.

We see the glory of how God's Word equips us to honor and worship Him rightly.

We see the glory of God’s instruction to us concerning His Word.

Mark 1:14-15 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

When Jesus began His public ministry, he began by preaching the gospel to all the people.

He preached the need to repent of sins now and believe the gospel message.

Acts 4:1-3 And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. 4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.

Peter and John had done a notable miracle and were called before the religious leaders and told not to peach the gospel of Christ anymore.

The apostles were taken into custody at the orders of the ruling council but notice what the text tells us.

There were more than five thousand who believed the gospel that day, and this is more than the Day of Pentecost when the church was birthed.

We are told that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Paul told the Philippian jailor that he must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and he would be saved.

Thus, we see the glory of accepting the gospel by faith.

Deuteronomy 4:2 2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

God commanded us not to add to or take away from the scriptures that He gave us.

This command is found in both the Old and New Testaments.

In the time of Christ, Rabbis added layers of false teaching, and made many private interpretations of scripture, which we are not to do (See 2 Peter 1:20)

In our day, televangelists make merchandise of the people by preaching another gospel that is not The Gospel.

They preach that God wants you to be wealthy, healthy and happy, but this is doctrine of devils  (See 2 Peter 2:3)

Some have changed God’s truth into a lie  by saying that God is pleased with same sex marriages or sexual perversion (See Romans 1:25-31)

Mark 7:9-13 9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: 11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

The law of God commands that children are to honor their parents and to help them when they reach an old age and are in need of help.

The Jews false teaching said that if a son said that the assets he had were "Corban" that is dedicated to God, then he was freed from his obligation to care fot his aged parents.

This teaching and practice violates the command of God and makes it of none effect.

History tells us that even when they hid their assets by saying "Corban" most men still used their assets as they pleased.

We wee the glory of not reasoning around what God says to us.

Acts 1:7-8 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Jesus' disciples asked Hi if the Father was going to restore Israel's kingdom soon.

They still had the idea that Messiah would establish a military type rule and overthrow Roman rule in the process.

God had very different plans and Jesus said they were to return to Jerusalem and wait for the Spirit of God to come.

He would empower them to be Christ's witnesses beginning at Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the whole world.

Romans 1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

1 Thessalonians 1:7-8 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. 8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

The apostle Paul commended the Christians at Rome and Thessalonica because their faith spread through the whole world.

They were sharing the gospel of Christ with people who had not heard the gospel.

We see the glory of sharing the gospel with other people as Christ commanded.

Psalm 119:47-48 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved. 48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

The Psalmist expressed the delight and satisfaction he found in reading and studying the scriptures.

He loved God's commandments and thought about them throughout each day.

Psalm 119:97 MEM. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

Psalm 119:140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.

Psalm 119:159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness.

Again and again, the Psalmist declares his love for the Word of God and this is to show each of us that we too, need to cultivate a love for God and His wonderful Word.

Jeremiah 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

Jeremiah the prophet tells us that he found the Word of God and he ate them figuratively, to show us that we must hear the Word, read the Word, study the Word and memorize the Word.

Doing so will fill us with great joy and happiness.

Thus, we see the glory of loving the Word of God.

2 Timothy 3:15-17 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Paul wrote to young pastor Timothy in order to prepare him for ministering when Paul was taken home by the Lord.

The gospel can be understood by children such that they can be converted to Christ.

This is why we as parents or grandparents seek to point those loved young ones to Christ by pointing them to the Word.

This wonderful, inspired Word of God is profitable for many good things in the life of each Christian.

It teaches us sound doctrines of our faith and of God, His Son, Jesus Christ and His indwelling Spirit.

However, when we sin, this same word rebukes us and confronts us about that sin.

Then the word corrects us by showing us what we must do since we sinned. We must confess and forsake our sin and receive the cleansing promised by our Father in heaven (See 1 John 1:7-9).

Last, this wonderful Word gives us instruction in righteousness so that we do not fall back into sin.

The new result of this living truth from God is that we will be changed and our lives with be transformed day by day.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Paul wrote to the Thessalonians about how the Word of God is effective and at work in our heart, mind and soul to conform us more and more into the image of Jesus Christ.

Therefore, we see the glory of being changed by the Word of God.

Psalm 25:4-5 Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. 5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

May this prayer be our prayer. When we open our Bibles, let us ask God to show us His ways and He will do this for us. He will teach us the path He wants us to walk in.

He promised to lead us in His truth through the ministry of His Spirit with the Word (See John 14-16).

May our Lord be pleased with our response to His Word.
Bob
