Thanksgiving From The Bible Pt: 6 Give Thanks & Dedicate Our Homes To Jehovah

Give thanks for Jehovah's deliverance.

Psalm 30:1  A Psalm and Song at the dedication of the house of David. I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.

This is another Psalm of King David and it was written when his royal residence in Jerusalem was finished. David had political enemies as well as military foes.

Though Samuel the prophet, anointed David as king to replace Saul, King Saul constantly tried to kill David, even though David loyally served Saul.

This Psalm is an expression of David giving thanks to Jehovah, for the many instances when he was saved from Saul's hateful acts.

King David gave thanks by extolling Jehovah. The word "extol" means to raise up Jehovah high for all to see, because He is praiseworthy.

David was ready to give thanks because Jehovah lifted him up out of his troubles. This is like letting down a bucket into a deep well to draw up much needed water.

Therefore, David was exalting his God because He gave the King deliverance from his enemies.

Why did King David dedicate his home? Under Moses, God fearing Israelites established a good custom of dedicating a new home to God.

Give thanks by dedicating our homes to God.

Deuteronomy 20:5  And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

A home was dedicated in the sense of a married couple living for the LORD, or parents determining to raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, training them up in the way that they should go.

Dedicating a home was so important that a husband was exempted from military service, until his home was set in order and dedicated to Jehovah.

Give thanks by building our homes around God's word.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7)  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8)  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9)  And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Dedicating a home in this manner is a commitment to honor God with all the activities that take place in the home. It also connects to making the scriptures prominent in each home.

David did this when his house was built, because even a royal palace needs God's protection and His direction.

Each Christian home should be dedicated to God, as a sanctuary from the world where God is honored.

We must solemnly commit ourselves, our families, and our family affairs, to God's guidance and care. Our home should serve the Lord for family worship and practicing gospel obedience.

Give thanks because of Jehovah's holiness and salvation.

Psalm 30:2-4  O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. 3)  O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. 4)  Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

All people are born with Adam's sin nature. His original sin means that we have no spiritual life and that we will be prone to committing personal sins.

I did not hear and heed the gospel of Jesus Christ until I was 31 years old. It was God's mercy and grace that kept me alive that long, so that I could repent of my sins and turn to Jesus for salvation.

Just as Jehovah kept David from dying and brought him up out of the pit, so He did for me and all who are born again. Thus, we give thanks to God for His providential blessings and amazing lovingkindness.

We sing unto Him as we give Him thanks because remembering His holiness reminds us that He would be justified in condemning us for our sins.

We give thanks because He made a way of salvation. We give thanks because Jehovah will save all who call upon His glorious name.

Give thanks for all the spiritual blessings from Jehovah.

Psalm 30:10-12  Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper. 11)  Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; 12)  To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

David brings this Psalm of dedication to a close by rejoicing in the fact that Jehovah hears our prayers because He loves and cares for the sheep of His pasture.

He basked in the mercy of God that brings reconciliation, restoration of our relationship with Him and forgiveness of our sins.

Thoughts to Ponder...

We give thanks because when we repented of our sins, Jehovah turned our dead soul away from sin's darkness and filled it the light of His glory and grace. He put a new song in our hearts and filled us with joy and gladness.

Our glory as believers is to sing praises to Jehovah, ascribing glory to Him all the days of our lives.

Let us not be silent about singing praises to Jehovah. Let us not be forgetful about giving thanks to Him for all He has done for us and for all of His promises.

Let us give thanks to Jehovah forever, all through this life and through eternity.
