Jesus continues teaching us about what constitutes true happiness, contentment and blessing.
The state of enjoying God's blessing and happiness is reserved for the poor in spirit.
The poor in spirit have been crushed by life circumstances and call upon the Lord for help.
The kingdom of heaven belongs to all those called upon the Lord from all generations of humanity until this moment.
Those who mourn shall receive comfort from God.
Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit whom He called the Comforter.
The Holy Spirit lives in us to build a habitation of God through the Spirit (See Ephesians 2:22).
Those who are meek shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
The Greek word translated "meek" is only used three times in the New Testament.
The "meek" are those who are not easily provoked to anger.
The "meek" patiently bear ill will and insults from others.
Meekness produces peace from God.
Meekness comes from a heart that refuses to be moved by harsh insults. It looks upon those who speak to them with pity.
Meekness is not considered as a moral virtue, but as a Christian grace, a fruit of the Spirit of God.
Christ is our example and He displayed meekness often.
The "meek" are courteous to all and think the best of others, instead of having evil thoughts.
The "meek" do not envy the gifts and graces of other men.
The "meek" are willing to be instructed or admonished by others.
The "meek" desire to quietly submit to the will of God even if doing so brings hardship.
The meek are happy and blessed.
The meek quietly submit themselves to God, to His word and to His rod.
The meek follow His directions, and comply with His will, and are gentle towards all men (See Titus 3:2).
The meek bear provocation without being inflamed by it. They are either silent, or return a soft answer.
They are the meek who would rather forgive injuries than seek revenge.
Jesus is our example and He was both meek and lowly in heart.
Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Jesus encourages believers to come to Him for He will give us rest.
Christ will teach us the ways of God so that we may enjoy the Father's blessings.
Just as Jesus was meek and lowly during His earthly ministry, so Christians should seek the same spirit of meekness from God.
Moses is described as the meekest man of his generation.
Numbers 12:1-3 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. 2) And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. 3) (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)
Moses saw God face to face. He was greatly loved by God.
Aaron and Miriam were jealous over the responsibilities God gave to Moses and they spoke against him.
God judged them for their sin, but note what the Bible says about the character of Moses.
He was "very meek" more so than any other person living at that time.
Jehovah will guide the meek and teach them His ways so they live for God.
Psalm 25:8-10 Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. 9) The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. 10) All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
The Psalmist tells us about the goodness and upright character of God.
Jehovah will teach sinners the way of salvation so that they might repent and be saved from their sins.
The meek hearted individuals will be guided by God and He will teach them His ways.
Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
The prophet Isaiah shows that those who are meek are people who are open to the gospel and the salvation God offers through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.
The meek will inherit the earth and find delight in peace from God.
Psalm 37:9-11 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. 10) For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. 11) But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
The promise of God is that the meek shall inherit the earth.
The meek wait patiently for the LORD to return and establish His kingdom on earth.
They will see the wicked and evil doers cut off by the judgment of God.
The meek will inherit the earth.
They will find great delight because Christ, the Prince of Peace has prevailed upon all nations, and there is a genuine peace on earth.
The meek according to the Psalmist, are those who suffer maltreatment meant to irritate, to unsettle, to dishearten or to divert them away from resting in Christ.
The meek calmly and quietly persist in their allegiance to the Lord.
God’s true servants shall finally have dominion in the land.
Inheriting the earth is a Messianic application of the original meaning. Jesus shows that those who manifest a meek reception of His will would obtain that full possession of the land.
Yet, Christ's words have a much fuller meaning and are connected to the "kingdom of heaven."
The meek shall inherit as their rightful possession from their Father, the whole earth.
Jesus speaks of the new earth and the new heaven (See Isaiah 11:6-9; 65:25; Revelation 21:1).
We see that the Beatitudes taught by Jesus are spiritual in nature. Genuine meekness comes from receiving a new heart and a new spirit from God.
The inheritance comes to those who are born again, children of God.
