Diseases and deaths came into the world by the sin and disobedience of the first Adam (See Romans 5:12).
Christ came as the second Adam and conquered both disease and death.
Matthew told us how Jesus healed an incurable disease that plagued a woman for twelve years and how Jesus raised Jairus' daughter from the dead.
No one could ever read these eyewitness accounts with an open mind and not grasp that Jesus is indeed, God manifest in the flesh.
Two blind men find hope and followed Jesus seeking mercy.
Matthew 9:27-28 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. 28) And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
There are about thirteen specific instances of blind men healed by Jesus in addition to blind receiving sight where no number is given.
That Jesus healed so many blind people reminds us that all people are born sinners, dead in their sins and blinded to spiritual realities about God, the gospel and Jesus our Savior.
Jesus came to give sight to the spiritually blind as well as to heal those who suffered from physical blindness.
Two blind men are included in Matthew's gospel.
They must have been in the crowd of people who thronged Him.
They heard the woman testify how Jesus healed her issue of blood.
They heard how Jesus raised Jairus' daughter from the dead.
What they knew about Jesus filled their hearts with hope that He could help them.
We see their faith in that they called Jesus "thou son of David" which means they recognized Christ as Messiah.
We see their faith when they saw how merciful and compassionate Jesus was.
We see their faith when they heard how He forgave sins and healed the lame man and they followed Jesus in the crowd.
They learned how Jesus always did good and helped others in need.
He never turned anyone away that sought His help.
The blind men followed Jesus all the way to the home where He was staying, imploring Jesus to show mercy upon them for their blindness.
Remember that the Bible repeatedly teaches us that we are saved through faith by God's grace (See Galatians 2:8-10).
Romans 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17) For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Therefore, Jesus asked the two blind men "Do you believe that I can restore your sight?"
They affirmed their faith and said "Yes, Lord, we believe."
Paul declared that he was not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God to save souls, to bring them from spiritual darkness into His marvelous light.
Salvation is by faith and the two blind men made a clear confession of faith in Jesus Christ.
Jesus was always ready to help those in need because His heart is God's heart toward us.
Matthew 9:29-31 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. 30) And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. 31) But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.
Jesus touched the leper when He healed him, even though no one would even think of touching because it made them unclean.
Jesus took the hand of Jairus' dead daughter when He raised her to life. No one would touch a dead body because it made them unclean.
This was how Jesus showed His compassion and love for all to whom He ministered.
He touched their blind eyes, and said "let it be according to your faith" which simply means that if their profession of faith was genuine and from their heart, they would receive their sight.
"Their eyes were opened." Simple words tell us what happened but I do not think we can truly appreciate the depth of this miracle.
Imagine yourself being blind from birth or from a disease.
Your world would be marked by darkness and dependency upon others to assist you with every task in life.
Nothing would be easy for a blind person and they would no doubt suffer some level of social isolation.
By the power of God in Christ, suddenly their eyes were opened.
They could see people, trees, sunsets, sunrises, streams, homes and colors for the first time!
Newly received sight certainly gave a massive jolt to their entire being, seeing what they only heard people describe, and seeing Jesus the Lord who healed them.
Floods of joy, happiness and excitement coursed through their body and mind as the reality of no longer being blind set in.
Again, Jesus charged them not to tell anyone what He had done for them.
Yet, these men could not refrain from telling others about Jesus.
They told their families, their friends and neighbors how Jesus had mercy and power to restore their sight.
I pray that we too, will joyously tell others how Jesus saved our soul from Hell and gave us new life in Christ and a brand new beginning to walk in newness of life.
Psalm 27:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
King David, the sweet Psalmist of Israel declared that Jehovah is our light and salvation.
Since this is true for the believer in Christ, whom shall we fear?
The LORD granted us eternal life through repentant faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.
We need not fear our enemies because our soul is secure in Christ.
We need not fear the Devil because he cannot pry us out of the Father's omnipotent hand.
Psalm 43:3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
This is why we must share the gospel with those who are lost, who do not know the LORD.
God's Word is light that penetrates the sin darkened souls of humanity.
Light from God's Word will bring us to a place where we can worship God in Spirit and in truth.
Psalm 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Light from scripture shows us how to avoid falling into sin and it illuminates the path of godliness that God wants His children to walk on.
Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
The walk with God as a Christian living in a depraved world must be as a shining light that God will use to draw people to Himself.
This shining light means living a holy life that is a witness for God in this Sin darkened world.
Acts 26:15-18 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16) But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 17) Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 18) To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
Saul was a Christ hating, church persecuting Pharisee.
His life was devoted to stamping out Christianity and reviling the name of Jesus.
God had other plans for Saul and Jesus stopped him in his tracks on the way to Damascus to persecute the church.
Saul was blinded by his encounter with the risen Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus sent a senior saint named Ananias to lay hands on Saul (Re-named Paul) that he might receive his sight.
Later, Paul testified of his conversion to Christ and the commission to preach the gospel that he received from Jesus.
Jesus specifically said Paul must preach the gospel and He would open their eyes and turn them away from spiritual darkness and away from the power of Satan.
He would forgive their sins and give them a new heart and a new spirit as He promised to do.
1 Peter 2:9-12 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10) Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. 11) Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 12) Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Peter reminds us that when the gospel of Christ penetrated our sin darkened hearts, we saw the light, we were called out of darkness into God's marvelous kingdom of light.
With salvation comes a responsibility to live for God's glory and to have our behaviors line up with His commands.
Jesus' healing of the two blind men bring all these beautiful truths of salvation before us.
If you are born again, I pray that these truths will encourage each of us to renew our commitment to live for the glory of God.
I pray that we will be strengthened to live according to the gospel and be Christ's faithful witnesses, just as Charlie Kirk was.
If you are reading this post and know you are not born again, I plead with you to repent of your sins and trust Jesus for salvation this day.
Receive light from God's Word and receive a new heart and a new spirit so that you can enjoy the great blessing of walking with Christ, until He calls us home to heaven.
