Psalm 2 A Blessed Man Living In A Godless World

Psalm 2:1  Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 

The word "heathen" is used of Gentiles and in this context, the Gentile nations of the world.

What are they doing? 

The same thing they have always done. 

The are "raging" which means causing tumult, turmoil and trouble.

One only needs to look at people raging in America  inciting violent riots, causing expensive property damage and routinely breaking our laws.

What are they doing in rage? 

They are attacking all the stabilizing influences of a civilization. 

The Biblical family unit is under attack.

The education system has been overrun with leftist ideology polluting the minds of our nation's youth.

Communism is extolled and capitalism scorned.

Some want to destroy our constitutional republic which would result in the loss of liberty prescribed in the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.

Christ's church has been under relentless attack for decades.

Many pastors no longer preach about sin, depravity and God's judgment.

Many churches openly embrace sexual perversion, infanticide and defying governmental authority, even though this is contradicted by the Scriptures.

Many churches have morphed into music, dress, behavior that imitates the world instead of being Christ like and God honoring.

Thus, in our modern culture, we see much rage from the heathen.

Gen 6:1  And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2  That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3  And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4  There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 5  And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 

Why do they do these terrible things? Because they have wicked hearts and adamantly reject God and His Word!

This same wicked spirit of rebellious people was evident in the time of Noah.

The antediluvian world perished when God's judgment brought a flood to destroy them.

The present evil world we inhabit is also headed for final judgment, but it will be by fire not by another flood (See 2 Peter 3:5-7).

Those raging have minds preoccupied with foolish or evil plots because their imagination is not restrained by the truth of God's Word.

We must remember that all the turmoil, tumult and trouble we see are indicators that Satan is having his way in the hearts of wicked men.

We cannot peer into the spiritual realm but we know that spiritual wickedness in high places is real (See Ephesians 6:10-20).

Psalm 2:2-3  The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3  Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. 

Then, as now, rulers of nations hatch evil schemes and promote immorality that is sharply contradicted by the Word of God.

Have you taken note of how almost all entertainment venues promote sin? What God says do not do, they send a message of "Do it."

What God commands us to do, they refuse to do and send messages of rebellion against God.

Governments sometimes operate the same way.

For example, one state governor just signed a law permitting abortion a soon as a baby is born, and behind her were a lot of women clapping and celebrating their new right to kill a baby at birth!

Thus, most nations and people are trying to break the cords of God's moral law in order to throw His commandments into the trash bin of human history.

What does God think about all of this?

Psalm 2:4-5  He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. 5  Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.  

He laughs at man's puny efforts to overthrow omnipotent God.

He views such rebellion with contempt and only God knows when He will bring it all to an end.

One consistent thread that runs through all the scriptures is that the wicked will not get away with their evil actions.

God will hold them to account and they will individually be consigned to the flames of Hell for eternity.

Psalm 2:6  Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7  I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8  Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9  Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. 

In spite of Satan's wicked schemes and mankind's hateful rebellion, God will prevail.

Jesus Christ, will rule and reign as King of all kings and He will govern the nations with a rod of iron. They will submit to the power of Christ.

The Psalmist then looks forward to the birth of Messiah, the Christ of God. He is also the Son of God and one with His Father (See John 10:30).

All the wicked people and nations will be given to Jesus Christ and He will destroy all who refuse to repent of their sins and trust Him for salvation.

Jesus will use His holy rod of iron, that sharp two edged sword that goes out of His mouth (See Revelation 19:11-21). 

This pictures the Word of God and it will do what God wants to do with it.

Christ will speak and nations shall be shattered like clay pots thrown onto rocky ground.

Psalm 2:10-12  Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11  Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12  Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. 

This Psalm closes with a warning to the kings, rulers and nations that every generation needs to hear and heed.

Here is knowledge and wisdom: Kings, rulers, governments and people must learn to serve the Lord Jesus Christ with fear and trembling.

They must repent of their sins and put their trust in the Son of God or else face His wrath and eternal condemnation.

However, the blessed man is each of those who trust Him fully.

Let us share these words of truth with those who do not know God.

Let is live as examples of godly men, women and young people.

Let us be Christ's faithful servants and ready witnesses.

Let us pray this for our leaders, so that wicked nations can be brought back from the brink of being extinguished by God.
