The phrase "house of God" is found 90 times in scripture and 84 of those are in the Old Testament.

The phrase  "house of the LORD" is found 234 times, all in the Old Testament.

During our study of King Joash, and the faithful priest named Jehoiada, I noticed a repeated emphasis upon the house of the LORD.

As we looked into the condition of the house of the LORD (the temple built by King Solomon) we noted that it was damaged but not destroyed.

The priests and Levites who served God in His house were scattered but not killed.

We saw that the temple chambers were still accessible but the temple had been plundered by the wicked prophets of Baal.

We asked the question "What was God's purpose for His house?"

To have a place were He could meet with His people.

To have a place where God accepted the sacrifices required for the sins of the people.

To have a place where the people of God can offer Him praise and worship.

To have a place where God's people give their tithes and offerings.

To have a place where God's people can pray and hear the scriptures taught.

We asked another question. "Who was the house of God for?"

It was for those who desire to live in accord with God's Word.

It was for those whose hearts and hands were cleansed from sin.

It was for those who longed to see the glory of God.

It was for sinners in need of a Savior and for backsliders to repent and return to Jehovah.

We asked another question. "What is God's purpose for His church today?

It is for God's people to meet together.

It is for Jesus Christ, the eternal sacrifice is exalted.

It is for offering corporate praise and worship to our all glorious God.

It is for bringing in our tithes and offerings.

It is for a time of corporate prayer and hearing from God through the preaching of His Word.

I hope this lesson will stir our hearts, strengthen our faith and help us remember that God is always at work, even in the darkest of times.

Bob
