Biblical Principles For Godly Music

Good morning to all of our wonderful Readers....

This past Wednesday Pastor Alvis had me fill the pulpit while he was away.

I spoke about the Biblical principles that shape and govern Godly or sacred music.

It is audio only but I hope that each of you who can listen to it will be blessed by seeing these truths from the scriptures.

Principles For Godly Music                                     October 7 2026

1. All of life is to be lived for the glory of God.

1 Chronicles 16:26-29

Psalm 29:1-2  A Psalm of David. Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength. 2  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

Psalm 50:23  Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.

Psalm 96:7-8  Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. 8  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts

Psalm 115:1  Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.

1 Corinthians 10:31  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Ø Learning to live for God’s glory greatly helps us worship Him.

2. The right foundation of Godly music is the Word of God.

Psalm 119:54  Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

Statutes are prescribed limits, boundaries or decrees set by God

Psalm 15:1-2

Having God’s truth in our heart is necessary for communion with God.

Psalm 28:6-7  Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications. 7  The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

Psalm 43:3-4  O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. 4  Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

Psalm 119:105        Psalm 71:17-24      Psalm 86:6-13

Psalm 119:160-162

Awe = fear, trembling, reverence    Rejoice = bright, cheerful, joyous, glad

Isaiah 12:1-5  And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. 2  Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. 3  Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation. 4  And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. 5  Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.

Ø Truth from the Word of God must govern the content of our music.

3. Scripture based music builds up our faith and floods our heart with joy.

Colossians 3:16-17  16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

All of the inspired scriptures

Dwell= inhabit us to influence us for good; used of Spirit indwelling us.

Ephesians 5:18-21  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19  Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20  Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21  Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Ø Godly music must be distinctly different from the culture.

1 Chronicles 23:5  4,000 Levites to praise with voice and instruments

1 Chronicles 25:1-7

2 Chronicles 5:11-14

Nehemiah 12:27-47

Godly music is founded on the scriptures.

Godly music is centered upon the LORD of glory.

Godly music is Holy Spirit guided and filled with reverence and purity. Jn 16

Godly music teaches truth and edifies Christians.

Godly music is not fleshly, worldly, sensual or man centered.
